09/21/2010
Here is a quick rundown of the new provisions:
- Insurers can't deny coverage to children under age 19 because of pre-existing conditions. That provision will be extended to adults in 2014
- Health Plans must cover recommended preventive services, such as mammograms, with no copay
- Insurers can't drop patients when they become sick due to a patient's error on an insurance application
- Lifetime caps on coverage are prohibited
- All new plans must include new rules for internal and external appeal processes when consumers disagree with coverage decisions
- Women can see their gynecologists without prior approval from a primary care physician
- When patients have a medical emergency while traveling, they can seek treatment at the nearest facility without incurring out- of- network surcharges
- Young adults can stay on their parents coverage until age 26 and in some cases in Pennsylvania until 29
